Man and Machine: The Music of Steven Bryant
On May 9th, 2017, the Blue Valley West Band Program presented their final concert of the year. The concert was titled “Man and Machine: The Music of Steven Bryant.” Steven Bryant was here as our composer-in-residence to rehearse with our students and spoke during the concert. The concert featured all three concert ensembles at BVW performing his works. Our students worked very hard on this music and were excited to perform it for the composer himself.
In addition, this concert event featured collaboration with the BVW Visual Art and Media Departments. Nearly all of the art classes here at West took inspiration from Steven Bryant’s music and the theme of “Man vs. Machine” in their works throughout the school year. Their art, sculptures, and photography were featured in our gallery hall. The broadcasting class at West created a digital video using these artworks to accompany Ecstatic Waters. Our student literary magazine, The Green Light, also wrote works on these themes, and their works were featured in the concert program. In total, over 300 BVW students contributed to this concert in some way.
In addition to the concert, we hosted open rehearsals with Steven Bryant during the day in the PAC. The schedule for rehearsals was:
7:30-9:20 AM - Symphonic Band – Coil
1:15-2:00 PM - Concert Band – The Machine Awakes
2:10-3:30 PM - Symphonic Wind Ensemble - Radiant Joy, Dusk, and Ecstatic Waters
This concert was free and open to the public. We loved having a packed audience representing the musical and artistic community in our area. If you couldn't make it to the concert, the livestream of the concert is at the top of this page and can be found on the band Facebook page.
