We are 1 week out from our Spring Band Concerts! Please refer to additional posts in the newsletter and on Canvas regarding details for our Concert and Jazz Band performances! While we are approaching the end of the school year, we are also busily preparing for a return to a more normal summer and fall season for our band program. Please be on the lookout for additional communication and schedule information over the next two weeks to help us finish this year on a high note, and to set ourselves off on the correct foot for 2021-2022! As we prepare for our Spring Concert and Student Recognition, there will be deadlines for submitting several forms. Please check your weekly email as well as Canvas notifications for information! Placements - A reminder these were due on Friday. Please submit if you have not done so. Placements will be sent to Counselors at the end of the week. Students will be able to view 2021-2022 Concert Ensemble Placements at the end of the week as well. Happy Easter and Happy Passover to those who are celebrating this weekend! Congratulations those who submitted videos for the KSHSAA Solo and Ensemble Festival! Critiques and results should be available later this week. Please see below for some additional information about this week. Placements - A reminder to all band members in Grades 9 - 11 that your 4th Quarter Assessment / Placement Hearing Videos are due in Canvas by Friday of this week. Percussionists needing to use the band room to record mallet or timpani can arrange times with a director. The band room is available during Academic Check and after school. Parent / Booster Meeting - As we plan band activities for next year, our fantastic Blue Valley West Band Boosters (BVWBBB) are also preparing for a return to many of our normal events and traditions. ALL Band Parents are automatically members of the BVWBB, and you have a unique opportunity to be involved with and experience your student's journey through high school band from a front row seat! On Wednesday, April 7 from 7-8 PM, the BVWBB are hosting an informational meeting where you can learn about plans for the marching and concert seasons, fundraising, and opportunities to support our great band program! The meeting will be held in the Blue Valley West Band Room. For parents not comfortable with attending in person, Mr. Love will have a live Zoom running of the meeting as well. Please take a few minutes to attend and learn more about the 2021-2022 Band Program and our BVW Band Boosters! Winter Guard - Our Blue Valley West Winter Guard Is finishing up their competitive season. They will record and submit their final video for the MCCGA Championships this coming Tuesday. On Thursday they will perform an encore of their show for parents in the BV West Gym beginning at 7 PM. Good luck Guard! BVW Musical - This week the BVW Performing Arts Department presents their musical, The Little Mermaid. As with all activities this year, the cast, crew, pit, and directors have had to work around numerous challenges due to COVID, but in spite of any obstacles, they have assembled a fantastic production! We have a number of band students filling roles in the pit, technical crew, and on stage - to them we want to say break a leg! We hope that you all have had an enjoyable Spring Break! This week we welcome back all in-person students full-time in the building. We acknowledge that we may have some apprehension about being in a full building again after over a year of remote / hybrid learning, but we are excited for our band students to begin playing in larger groups again on a more consistent basis! We continue to follow all mitigation strategies (bell covers, masks, distancing, and aerosol breaks) in every rehearsal that have enabled bands to successfully and very safely play together over the past year across the country. Together we will forge ahead on this new step as a return to something more normal in our part of the school! 4th Quarter is often a very busy time of the band "year," and despite the restrictions we have in place this year is no exception. This week is our "Concert" Week. All of our concert ensembles will be recording a virtual concert to be released at the end of the week. See below for schedule details. This will be our last Virtual concert - our Spring Band Concert, scheduled for May 11, will be held in person with a live audience. More details to be shared as we get closer to May. For our concert recording, students need to wear their concert black attire. All black - neck to and neck to wrist. A long sleeved, collared, black button down shirt and black dress pants or long skirt are preferred along with black socks and shoes. It was a pleasure to visit with parents this week. If you missed conferences, but would like to visit about your student's progress in band please feel free to email Mr. Love or Mr. Ramsey at any time! This week we resume our evening rehearsals as we return to a "normal" schedule and hopefully some better weather! On Monday afternoon, March 1, music and instructions for 2021-2022 ensemble placements will be posted. Any student in grades 8-11 that intends to play in band and / or jazz band for next year will need to complete a placement hearing. Not much new information this week. Parent / Teacher Conferences take place this week. Whether your student is "in-person" or "virtual" for their band experience, we will use the same link for sign-ups. You can access the conference sign-up form HERE. Please note that the school is shutting off conference sign-ups at 7 PM today. No evening rehearsals this week except for Winter Guard. Due to the loss of rehearsals due to inclement weather days and schedule adjustments at the school, we will be modifying the timeline of our recording for this next virtual concert. Please also stay tuned for information regarding our spring concerts which we hope to have fully in-person. Likewise we are making some adjustments to leadership auditions for marching band. Those will be communicated directly with studnts. We look forward to visiting with many of you during conferences this week. We hope you are all staying safe and warm with the arctic blast that has descended upon us this week! With that, just a courtesy reminder to make sure you have enrolled in the BAND APP. In the event that inclement weather requires us to alter or cancel activities such as our upcoming evening rehearsals, we will communicate such announcements via the BAND App. If you haven't used the app think of it as a more secure method for group texting or a closed social media platform that enables us to share information within the band very quickly. A final reminder that the enrollment process concludes this week. If you haven't yet, please check out our enrollment brochure. Again, we welcome you to reach out with any individual questions you might have related to band. We've had many excellent questions regarding marching band and other aspects of the program. A terrific opportunity for students! This week begins the enrollment process. If you haven't yet, please check out our enrollment brochure – while primarily focused on our incoming 9th grade students for next fall, it still has useful information for ALL of our band students. As always – if you have questions about how to fit band into your schedule, please make sure to visit with one of the directors. The addition of virtual ed for next year will free up many schedule issues enabling students to have even more options to to take courses in an area of interest!
