Our program hits the group running right from the start of the semester. Please review the information below regarding our upcoming performances and events. Performance Schedule All performances can be found on our Google Calendar. Below is a link to a printable list of dates to help with coordinating schedules. BVW Band Spring Performance Schedule Basketball Pep Band All band students participate in pep band during the Spring semester. Each member has 3 nights (which is 5 games – 1 single and 2 double headers.) Assignments can be adjusted as needed to accommodate other activity schedules, so long as those potential conflicts are discussed with Mr. Love well in advance – at least 2 weeks of the date. Pep Band Assignments can be found HERE. Dates of our pep band performances can be found HERE. Enrollment In the coming weeks students will begin the process of selecting courses for the 2023-2024 school year. If students have questions regarding band placements or course offerings please visit with a director. We are happy to assist students in navigating the school schedule to ensure they can continue playing in band while pursuing a range of interests at West! Our enrollment brochure can be found HERE. It is primarily targeted towards rising 9th grade students, but the information applies to all. Wind Ensemble Mini-Camp Monday, January 16, 6-9 PM. We will have private lesson staff and professionals here to work with Wind Ensemble in preparation for their KMEA performance in February. Our next mini-camp will be February 20. Side by Side Concert Our first Side by Side Concert is on Thursday, January 19 at 7 PM in the PAC and features the Wind Ensemble and 8th Grade Bands from Lakewood and Pleasant Ridge. Concert Black Attire. This is a shorter concert, but is an opportunity to present our program to 8th grade parents and students. For London trip participants, please note you will receive some additional email communication this week with some trip forms and reminders, so please check those inboxes! Final Exams The final exam for all band classes is to use the time for study hall. Our concert constitutes our final exam and given the hours our students put in outside of school, this is a small payback in the final rush of the semester. Good luck to all during your final tests and projects over the next week and a half! Basketball Pep Band Assignments for basketball pep band will be posted by the end of the week so students can schedule appropriately. There is a great deal of flexibility in the schedule. Dates of our pep band performances can be found HERE. All-State Band Auditions All-State Band Auditions take place in Salina on Saturday, January 7. We travel to Salina with our orchestra students who also qualified to audition. Bus will load at 5:00 AM on January 7. We will return to West at approximately 7 PM that evening. Additional information on auditions will be sent to students over break and reminders when we return. Band Winter Concert – Thursday, December 8 Performances include our area 6th grade bands, the BV West Percussion Ensemble, and our combined BV West Band Program performing our London concert repertoire. Concert begins at 7 PM in the BV West Performing Arts Center. West students need to arrive no later than 6:30 PM dressed in concert black attire. Please see below for reminders: Concert Attire A reminder that for our upcoming band concerts, students should wear ALL BLACK clothing. Appropriate examples of concert attire include: Long sleeve or ¾ sleeve button down shirt – short sleeves are not acceptable Black slacks, black skirt, or black dress – jeans are not acceptable Black shoes and black socks – marching shoes work just fine! London participants will need to pack these items in their luggage for our concert at St. James Smith Square. Airport Shuttle Survey A representative from each family traveling to London needs to complete the following survey by Tuesday, December 6 so we can determine interest for providing a shuttle to KCI. Thursday, November 17 – London Trip Meeting Required for all participant families. Detailed itinerary information and other logistical updates will be provided. Pep Band Our Basketball pep band schedule will begin in January due to preparations and shipping of equipment for London. All band members will be expected to perform at 3 pep band nights (5 games total – 2 double headers and 1 single game) during January and February. This is part of our support of our BV West Family. The pep band dates can be found below: Pep Band Schedule 22-23 Pep Band assignments will be made after Thanksgiving Break. There is a good deal of flexibility in how students are assigned or swapping of dates to accommodate other activities and sports. Wind Ensemble As shared earlier this year, Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at the KMEA State Music Convention in February, an honor equivalent to winning a state title. Due to the short preparation timeline and due to many short weeks in January and February, Wind Ensemble members will have some additional rehearsals scheduled. Those are tentatively set for Monday, November 28 from 7-9 PM Monday, January 16 from 7-9 PM Monday, February 20 from 7-9 PM Jingle Jazz – Thursday, December 1 Our annual Winter Concert for Jazz Band! Concert is at 7 PM in the PAC. ECKMEA All-District Honor Band and Jazz Band Concerts – Saturday, December 3 All events take place at Blue Valley High. Wednesday Parade Rehearsals Reminder that each Wednesday between now and when we leave for London (except for Thanksgiving week) all participants have a required rehearsal from 7-7:30 AM to prep for our parade performance. Meet at the track in the stadium before 7 and dress appropriately for the weather! Saturday, November 12 - London Parade Rehearsal 1:30 – 4:00 PM at West. We will learn our TV spotlight routine as well as rehearse for the parade and concert. This is a mandatory rehearsal for all trip performers. Placement Auditions Placements have concluded and results will be posted Monday afternoon in the band app. Placements are based upon each student’s musical development; ensemble instrumentation needs; and performance on the placement material. The goal is to place each student in an ensemble that will provide an appropriate balance of musical challenge and enjoyment. Students with questions about the strengths and areas of growth seen in the placement process may schedule a conference with a director. We will not discuss results via email. Our show peaked just in time for the KBA State Championships, and you certainly won over the crowd and adjudicators with our show! 3rd place in class in prelims and the Outstanding Guard Caption (and actually the #1 rated guard in prelims) were a great start. Getting to conclude the competitive marching season in Kansas with the last performance in Finals was truly a special moment. A 5th Place finish among a group of 6 bands who (including West) who have for the past 10-15 years been the most consistent high-performing groups in the state is a great way to cap off the season! We are extremely proud of the individual and ensemble growth that was demonstrated throughout the past several months and look forward to what lies ahead in our program as we finish out the Fall Semester!

Placement Auditions At the conclusion of marching band, we divide into three different concert bands for the remainder of the year: Wind Ensemble (most select); Symphonic Band; and Concert Band. At semester these groups move to different class hours. ALL band students will participate in a placement audition during the first week of November. Music for that placement will be available by 3 PM on Thursday, October 6 in Canvas. Honor Band Auditions: Anyone planning to audition for the ECKMEA Honor Band must complete the following form no later than 11:59 PM on Monday, October 10. Access the form HERE. October 21 – Home Football vs BV (Senior Night Recognition): Schedule will match that of other games with recognition of our outstanding senior class during the game. October 22 – Kansas Bandmasters Association State Championships: Our state marching championships in Lawrence! This will be an all-day event.
