The Blue Valley West Band Parent Association has developed a system to communicate student fund
raising account balances known as Student Ledgers. You can keep up with your Student Ledger
Balance by going to www.charmsmusic.com or simply fill out a payment form and place your payment
in the black lock box in the band office.

French Horn player and senior, Jordan James has
been named to the 2009 Honor Band of America. He
will participate with other band members from across
the country in the National Honor Band Festival in
Indianapolis. The festival will run from March 21-28 and
will be under the direction of Gary Hill, from Arizona
State University. Please make sure to congratulate
Jordan and his family for this great honor.
Nine West Students perform in Rose
Parade
On January 1, nine students from West had
the privilege to perform with the BOA Honor
Band in the Rose Parade. . The students
involved in were Carolyn Kinde, Matt
Primovic, Kristin Weber, Beth Levine, Ethan
Levine, Kristin Hjelmaas, Branden Surgnier,
Haley Conway, and Robbie Lindsey. Robbie
also had the honor of performing with the
Honor Band Drumline at Grand Nationals.

The Blue Valley West Red and Silver Brigade
is proud to announce that next year they will be
under the leadership of Head Drum Major
Kristin Weber and Senior Drum Majors Josh
Steddom and Matt Primovic. We are confident
that with these wonderful drum majors and
band council in charge, the Red and Silver
Brigade will enjoy the most success they have
ever had in the schools ninth year of existence.

Band to travel to London in 2009-2010 Band to perform in prestigious 2010 New Years Day Parade

Red and Silver Brigade to perform in 2010 London New Year's Day Parade
|
Blue Valley West has been selected as one of only
seven American Bands to perform in the prestigious
New Year's Day Parade. The band will travel from
December 27, 2009 to January 3, 2010. Students will
tour London, give a sold out concert performance, and
perform in the parade. This is a huge honor for the
Red and Silver Brigade and one that none of the
students will ever forget. The band was also very
fortunate to be visited by the Lord Mayor herself on
February 23. She was greeted by a huge audience
and was given a tour of Blue Valley West by the drum
majors. All of the dignitaries that attended the event
were also treated to a concert featuring the Symphonic
Band and Jazz Band. The band was featured on the
NBC news broadcast, in the Kansas City Star, and in

2009 Show Concept Announced.

The Red and Silver Brigade is ecstatic to announce our new drill writer for the 2009 marching season.
Kevin Ford, who works with Tarpon Springs High School and the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps
will be writing the drill for the marching band next season. Details are still being worked out, but the
show concept will be LOST AND FOUND. Expect some great moments from the Red and Silver Brigade
in a show that will feature music by Van Halen, Transformers, Imogen Heap, Michael Nyman, and
Gustav Mahler.
Jazz Band and Lab Jazz Earn Straight Ones at Wichita and 18th and Vine Festivals

Lab Jazz performed Friday, April 17 at Wichita State University and received straight ones from all three
judges. This is the highest rating possible. Sonny Tallavajhala performed a solo on the flugelhorn and was
named an outstanding soloist of the day. Congratulations to all of these students who worked hard for this.
Jazz Band performed Saturday, April 18 at the 18th and Vine Jazz Festival in the historic Gem Theater.
Students also ate at Arthur Bryant's Barbecue, went to the American Jazz Museum, and watched the
Mingus Big Band perform. The Jazz Ensemble received ones by all three judges and had a wonderful clinic.
Several audience members talked about how well the band played and even declared that "we've got soul."
Zach Boal and John Kelly were named outstanding soloists of they day.
Jazz Band performed Friday, March 6 at the KU Jazz Festival in Lawrence. They earned straight ones
from the judges and had a wonderful clinic with one of the judges. Devin Kennedy earned an outstanding
soloist award for her drum solo on Sing, Sang, Sung. It has been a wonderful year for jazz band. Please
come and see our final performance of the year at Follies on Friday, May 8.
Band selling Papa John's Pizza Cards to earn money for London trip.

The Papa john's Coupon Fundraiser has begun. All cards are sold for
$10. Please contact Lisa Kelly at 681-5919 for cards. All cash from sold
cards needs to be returned to the band room in an envelope with your
students name on it by Monday, May 11. All cards must be sold on the
spot and checks made out to BVW Band Boosters and cash are
accepted.
The cards have the following deals: one medium cheese pizza free
(carryout), (2 coupons) free large or extra large pizza with purchase of
any large or extra large pizza of equal or greater value at regular menu
price, (2 coupons) free order of cheese sticks with the purchase of any
large or extra large pizza at regular menu price, (2 coupons) free order
of bread sticks with the purchase of any large or extra large pizza at

Symphonic Band earns straight ones at State Large Group Festival

For the first time in three years, the Blue Valley West Symphonic Band has earned straight ones at
KHSAA State Large Group Festival. The band performed Variations on America by Charles Ives and
Nimrod from Enigma Variations by Sir Edward Elgar. The students have put a lot of time and effort into
this performance and we are very proud of this great accomplishment. Concert Band was one point
away from an overall one rating. They performed American Riversongs by Pierre LaPlante and For the
New Day Arisen by Stephen Barton. We are proud of all of the students for this accomplishment.
A Record 51 Medals earned at Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival

On Saturday, April 4, several Blue Valley West Band members performed in the Regional Solo and
Ensemble Festival at Blue valley High School. Thirty-Nine students earned a first division rating and
will be performing at State Solo and Ensemble Festival on April 25. These students earned a total of 51
medals with Kristin Weber earning four medals on her own. We are very proud of all of these students
and wish them the best of luck at State Solo and Ensemble. This is a true testament of the talent at
West since the students have put in a great deal of individual effort to make this happen.
