Jazz Ensembles
Jazz Ensemble classes rehearse at West during the school day. Jazz Ensemble I is the premier jazz band at West and performs music in a variety of styles including - big band, swing, funk, modern, and more. Students have the opportunity to further develop their improvisational skills and perform in combo and big band settings. Students in Jazz Ensemble II work on learning improvisation as well as performing music in a range of styles. Membership for each group is determined through an audition process each spring depending on enrollment. Concurrent enrollment in a Concert Ensemble is required. Both Jazz Ensembles perform in 2-3 concerts each year and at least one adjudicated Jazz Festival.
Lab Jazz Band is the third jazz band at West. Membership is open to any student who is interested in learning how to play jazz. The music focuses on developing basic jazz technique and improvisation. This is a large jazz ensemble, and many students play secondary instruments. This band meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in November and is led by senior students from both curricular Jazz Ensembles.
