Abigail Lyche is excited to join the Blue Valley West Bands as the Assistant Band Director for the 2023-2024 school year. She previously taught band and orchestra at Patrick Henry Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia for two years. During her time there, she more than tripled the size of both programs and advocated for the purchase of 42 new instruments. Before teaching middle school, Abigail taught general music for one year at Lake Highlands Elementary School in Richardson, Texas, where she received the Talented Teacher Award. For the past seven years, she has also assisted with several high school marching band programs, including Olathe East High School and Olathe Northwest High School.
Mrs. Lyche earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from The University of Kansas and will also graduate with her master’s degree in music education in the summer of 2024. During her undergrad, she played flute and piccolo in the KU Wind Ensemble and Basketball Band for four years. She was also head drum major of the Marching Jayhawks for two years, president of KU's collegiate National Association for Music Education, and Vice President of Kappa Kappa Psi, Eta Zeta chapter.
Abigail now continues her musical performance by playing flute and piccolo in the Crossroads Wind Symphony. She maintains active memberships in the National Association for Music Educators, Kansas Music Educators Association, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
